Foundation

The Villa Mairea Foundation preserves the cultural heritage values of Villa Mairea and the life’s work of Maire and Harry Gullichsen. The Foundation fulfils its purpose, among other things, by presenting the building to the public and by communicating the life’s work of its commissioners. The Foundation holds extensive collections and archives, which are open for the Foundation’s own research as well as for external research. The collections of Villa Mairea include art, design objects, a library and an archive.

Art and collections

The art and design collections comprise several thousand objects, some of which are on display at Villa Mairea and others stored elsewhere. The main focus of the Foundation’s art collection is on international modern art. We loan artworks for exhibitions. The core of the object collections consists of the original interior of Villa Mairea, including furniture and objects designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto.

Library and archive

The library collection includes books, sound recordings, magazines and other publications.
The archive contains tens of thousands of documents, the majority of which consist of Maire Gullichsen’s correspondence. Maire had extensive networks of collaboration in the fields of art and design, both internationally and in Finland. The Villa Mairea archive is open to researchers, so if your research topic relates to these subjects, please contact us.

Photographs

The Foundation holds thousands of historical photographs as well as a substantial collection of more recent images. If you require visual material related to Villa Mairea or the commissioning couple, we are happy to assist. Our photo archive serves a wide range of research and communication purposes.

Photography

Photography of the interiors of Villa Mairea is not permitted, and the building may not be used as a filming or photography location.
